Waterfalls in Europe: 10 Interesting Falls
There are tons of waterfalls in Europe and across the globe, each with its own merits. European waterfalls are among the most impressive globally, whether due to their sheer height, their geothermal properties, or other special features.
Here are some of the famous places of Europe: more than just bits of water flowing down a cliff. Hundreds and hundreds of waterfalls are available in Europe, but I have selected some best. Here are some of them:
# Krka, Croatia
As a great alternative to Plitvice Lakes, I previously wrote about the most awe-inspiring national parks in Europe, including Krka National Park. A famous tourist attraction in Croatia is Skradinski Buk Falls. They're undoubtedly stunning, instead of the clean, tidy water flowing down the falls. Approximately twenty separate falls of varying heights make up the falls. There are many other waterfalls in Skradinski Buk Park as well. A boat tour along the river is a great way to see further falls and collections of falls.
# Langfossen, Norway
Among Europe's tallest waterfalls, Norway has one of the most powerful displays. A number of its waterfalls are in the top fifty tallest waterfalls on the continent, along with all of its top five tallest waterfalls.
The highest waterfall in Europe is Vinnufossen, but I would say that Langfossen is a much more impressive site. It is partly because Langfossen has remained free to roar down the high cliffs into Krafjorden, unlike many other waterfalls in Norway where hydroelectric energy is harnessed. With the fjord in the foreground, you can take beautiful pictures of the waterfall, and along the fjord's shores are quaint Norwegian villages.
# Rhine Falls, Switzerland
Despite their narrowness, the Rhine Falls make up for their lack of height with their quality of beauty. There are nearly 500 feet of falls along the Rhine River. You can find a lot of water pouring over the falls during the summer because of all the snowmelt upstream.
Boat rides on the Rhine are a great way to see the falls, as well as Wörth Castle and Schloss Laufen, a palace situated nearby famous places of Europe.
# Terme di Saturnia, Italy
A geothermal waterfall near Saturnia, this natural hot spring has been a favorite of bathers since Roman times. The spa-like waters have been a favorite among many a nobleman!
Mill Falls and the Falls of Giorello are two waterfalls located in the area. It costs money to enter some spa water resorts, but you can swim free at other places, like the Terme di Saturnia Spa Resort. Located in the heart of quaint Tuscany, there's nothing better than relaxing in warm (and some say therapeutic) waters.
# Gljúfrafoss, Iceland
The magic of a waterfall cascading into a cave can't be beaten, precisely what you get here. The way to the waterfall will not appeal to claustrophobic people: you'll have to slide through a narrow crack in the rock before you reach the cave.
Once you enter the falls, you will be mesmerized by their stunning appearance. There is also a viewing platform on your way up, and if your feet get wet from the spray, make sure you are wearing waterproof shoes.
# Bigar Waterfall, Romania
As one of the most impressive waterfalls globally, this waterfall often wins accolades for being the most impressive globally! In front of the conical rock outcropping, hundreds of smaller streams flow down into the river below, adorned with bright green moss.
A shimmering veil surrounds the rock as a result of the water. The cave where the water comes from can also be viewed after you've seen the waterfall. Depending on what time of year you go to famous places in Europe, it might be slick, so wear appropriate walking shoes.
# Pliva Waterfall, Bosnia, and Herzegovina
Pliva Waterfall's true beauty lies behind its waterfall. Although the 70-foot cascades are spectacular, behind them is a town known as Jajce, which rises high up onto a hill and is dotted with historic buildings and fortifications, topped by a 14th-century fortress. The Pliva Lakes are located downstream from the main waterfall.
There are also dozens of smaller waterfalls next to watermill huts built during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which date back to the late 19th century. Although they lie dormant today, the mills once milled local wheat-and they add a little bit of unique charm to the picturesque views!
# Parc de Saint-Pons, France
In Parc de Saint-Pons, a popular tourist destination in Southern France, about an hour and a half outside of Marseille, a waterfall is a bit off the beaten track. It will take about an hour or two to reach the waterfall. However, if you want to take a walk, it's worth the effort. As the waterfalls spill into the river below, they flow down moss-covered cliffs.
In addition to the waterfall, nearby Saint-Pons Abbey, a Cistercian monastery that dates back to the 13th century but was abandoned in the 15th century, is also intriguing. Famous places of Europe as a bonus to your waterfalls tour, the place remains relatively untouched and unaltered right up to this day.
# Gullfoss, Iceland
Iceland's Gullfoss is considered one of the most impressive waterfalls globally. It is named after the color of the flowing water as it is illuminated by the sun since the water comes from the Lángjökull Glacier. You can't find a more impressive set of falls anywhere else.
They're three-tiered, each with impressive height and girth, and the river turns sharply between the upper and lower falls to make a unique view. Hydroelectric plants were discussed, and taming the falls was never implemented. Since the falls are currently protected national property, they will likely continue to flow free and wild.
# Gásadalur, Faroe Islands
There are so many famous places of Europe and charming spots on these two small islands located midway between mainland Europe and Iceland that you might not think of them when planning your European trip.
Even though Gasadalur village is relatively easy to reach due to its current infrastructure, it is home to fewer than fifty people. Stunning photo opportunities surround the falls, which cascade over high sea cliffs against the backdrop of the village and surrounding mountains!
